Marlene Pouri‑Lane Steps Down After 12 Years as Wrestling NZ President

17 July 2025 – Hamilton: After 12 years at the helm of Wrestling New Zealand, Marlene Pouri‑Lane has stepped down as President, leaving behind a legacy of growth, inclusion, and international success. Marlene’s journey began when she fell in love with a wrestler—now her husband, Pete Pouri‑Lane. A visit to the Hamilton Hawks Wrestling Club with their young children sparked a lifelong passion for the sport, leading her into committee roles and eventually the presidency.

A Decade of Progress

Under Marlene’s leadership:

  • Women’s involvement in wrestling, both on the mat and in governance, has grown significantly.

  • She was one of just four women globally to lead a national wrestling federation.

  • New Zealand celebrated major milestones, including Commonwealth medals and Tayla Ford’s historic Olympic debut in Paris 2024.

“I’m proud of being a voice for the whole wrestling community—listening, guiding, and supporting everyone involved.”

What’s Next

Marlene isn’t stepping away completely. She will remain:

  • Integrity Officer on the Wrestling NZ Board,

  • Vice President of Oceania Wrestling Union, and

  • A member of the Commonwealth Wrestling Federation Committee.

Her ongoing focus: growing youth and female participation and welcoming more diversity into the sport.

Wrestling NZ thanks Marlene Pouri‑Lane for her outstanding contribution and continued leadership on the national and international stage.
